Day One of POTD 2012

I've been playing around in InDesign and working on printing a photobook for Photo of the Day 2010. It's made me regret not doing it for 2011. I plan to get back to working on this on-going project for POTD 2012. If 2010 was any guide, POTD 2012 should be pretty awesome.

iPhone 4 and POTD

Early Morning Sun on Campus
The future of POTD... Well, it all started not because I wanted to make a stunning or portfolio-worthy photo every day. Instead, I wanted to practice composition and photo techniques that I can learn and apply. At first, I limited the camera I was using for POTD to my simply point-and-shoot camera. Then, I lost track of my purpose, got overzealous, and started shooting with my DSLR for POTD photos. Then, I got lazy.

Earlier this week, I got my new iPhone 4. Interestingly enough, I jumped on the bandwagon only after iOS 4.1 had the HDR feature for the iPhone camera. And I love it!

POTD evolved from being a project to practice my photography into being a photo-journal to share with distant friends and family.

I'm proposing that, for the future of POTD, I will shoot primarily with my iPhone 5.0 MP camera. Post-processing will be done through several photo-editing apps on the iPhone, starting primarily with Photoshop Express. (Originally, I've been post-processing through Aperture on my Mac, which, as you all know, has become terribly slow.) I believe that this way, I can not only post in a more timely matter (and without such a long pipelined procedure), but also share more candid photos that are more accurate to the experience.

We'll see how it goes.

POTD 100

Yesterday was the epic POTD 100. Hans and I made it. When I worked on this photography project by myself last year, I was three or four short of hitting the 100. Unfortunately for me, however, I had forgotten my camera at home and resorted to my iPhone 3G's shoddy camera.

My POTD 100 is titled "Number Two".

Most Prolific Writing Semester Ever?

This semester with my 21 credits and 8 classes will be the most torturous one during my time at Cornell. Among the 8 classes, four involve weekly one-page summaries or responses. This is on top of the work I'm still doing for Engineerography Blog (which, I'll admit, has taken a hit lately).

Although writing is still somewhat of an awkward and unusual activity for me, I'd like to think that I'm starting to get good at it. Maybe.

This photo "Contemplative" comes from my POTD (Photo of the Day) collection of last year. I'm trying to revive the project to a certain degree, but it's going along sluggishly.

Future of POTD

... is uncertain. Life has gotten in the way. I have returned to it for now with Today's POTD:

Vacation from POTD

Since this is my only chance to take a real break this entire summer, I will delay posting POTD until the end of my break. Interestingly enough, I have been taking the D40 out everyday this week. Photos to come back later.

POTD Halted

Unfortunately, I will be pausing POTD for a little bit (possibly resuming this weekend).

Don't ask.

I'm sorry.

POTD Delayed ...

Due to academic responsibilities and annoyances.

Sorry.

Photographic Style

Having just completed POTD #75 this afternoon, I have reviewed my previous POTD photos after this great milestone. Over the time since I started the POTD, I have realized that most of my photographs are of the same style.

I have began to like the high contrast, edge vignetting look of things. Recently, (after my visit to the doctor) I have discovered a new photographic style for myself. The POTD of that day and today's POTD, respectively, use this style or theme. I applied really high contrast, zero color saturation, and a 40% sepia tone. I like it a lot and would be tempted to apply it to future photos. I will try to restrain myself from making everything look the "same". See below:

Disconnect

Upon arriving at Cornell once again, I realized the severity of the circumstances that result from the lack of a portable and personal computer. My Internet time will be severely reduced. (Maybe this is a good thing.) POTD seems unlikely now, and pending updates to the website is delayed.

So sad ...

The Near-Future of POTD

A simple post:

Because I am without a computer, I might not be able to post daily. I will definitely still shoot and select a POTD for everyday, but posting it to the blog and to Flickr might be a problem. And even if I were to get a computer to use (which I probably will via the computer labs), I might not have the opportunity to edit, touch-up, and enhance the photos I will be taking. Definitely no Aperture and no Lightroom (not sure of this one), but there will definitely be Photoshop.

Please excuse me. I will see.

Mac-less

After the Apple Store visit, my first time to the new-ish West 14th Street Apple Store, I was somewhat disappointed that they will not replace it for me right off the bat. I was fortunate (or unfortunate) that they took it for a repair.

That means I will be computer-less for the better part of two weeks. And that I will have a better Mac than when I left it ... hopefully.

As a result, POTD will be limited, and blog posts will be limited as well. How sad ...

Playing with HDR

I honestly have no idea what it really does. All I know is that it has the ability to make regular pictures interesting. I have used this technique in yesterday's POTD and today's POTD.

HDR stands for high dynamic range, and it is an imaging technique that allows for a greater range in exposure than what would typically be seen. What comes out of all of this processing is an image that has high (or exaggerated) dynamic range.

I still have very little idea what this really means.

31

Yesterday's POTD marks the 31st in the series. Just 334 days to go. Oh boy ...

Machine Shoppe

Machine shop today to finish off the bulk of the air motor project. It is nearly complete. All that is left is the technical stuff and paperwork. One more shop visit to see if it'll all fit well enough. Today's POTD is a sample of what we have done so far.

Aspect Ratio for POTD

After playing with the D40 yesterday, I have decided to switch POTD's aspect ratio from 4x3 to 3x2. The result will be more of a widescreen view, thereby making things appear better that they are. Check out today's POTD.

In case you did not know, most cameras (of the point-and-shoot variety) give an aspect ratio of 4x3. This is similar to what televisions project as letterbox. These days it just doesn't look too appealing. DSLRs on the other hand, shoot in 3x2 (or 6x4) and it is more standard. After being reminded of this fact, I will be switching the POTD aspect ratio to 3x2. I will still shoot with the Sony N1, however. I just have to be more careful with my framing, since I will fix it in post.

Edit: There is a 3x2 mode on my point-and-shoot that I forgot about. Nice...

Cascadilla Trail

Today after spending over four hours in the machine shop (getting lucky in the morning for a lottery on one of the machines in the early morning), I decided to do something out of the ordinary. It was such an awesome day out today, I decided to go shooting with my Nikon.

I will cheat with today's POTD by using a D40 photo, rather than from the Sony N1 because I had too fun walking down and back Cascadilla Trail. I saw more people there than I had expected but all was well. I got into photographer mode, and I did not care. It was very relaxing, and I throughly enjoyed it. Because of the high contrast between shadow and sun, most of them came out odd. Just 18% were deemed good-to-show by me, mainly because of this huge difference between shadow and sun, and because a lot of what's in the gorge is repetitive. Haha I need some help, but I hope you like the pictures, on Flickr.

Afternoon Shadow 2

For today's POTD, I had a lot of options. The day was good; the weather was fine; the sky was blue. There were many things I had in mind of photographing. Mondays are generally good. I have most of the day free, and I have to walk pretty far to get to work, where I sit in front of an iMac for the better part of six hours. I have many more ideas lined up for Mondays, but I never seem to get a chance to post them because of more current photos.

Today's POTD was taken during lunch. While it is not the best photo (e.g. it is not sharp, or slightly out of focused), I like it a lot. I just really like cookies!

I decided to skip the usual dinner at Trillium and on the way back to my room, I walked past the bike rack which was the subject of the POTD of Sunday, March 30, 2008. It was at the most opportune time, it seemed. I ended up with something like this. Same bike rack. Same sun. Different shadow.
