"Yo, Kevin. Why do you have so many devices?" asked one of my housemates last week.
Quick answers are, I don't know, and, I am a hypocrite.
I am a firm believer that technology makes life more complicated and tense. We put up with the added stress because of a misplaced feeling of self-importance and a desire to own shiny devices. In the end, life is more complicated with cell phones and other mobile devices, and the supposed added benefit they offer in our lives is suspect.
Like I said... I am a hypocrite.

We think shiny, mechanical things make life easier, so we want them. Even if we find out they complicate things, we STILL want them, because like you said, they instill a feeling of importance. Also, they can be shiny, which no matter how evolved we get, is going to something that catches our eye. Some things are nessicary in daily life, like a phone, and a computer, but the other things make us feel happy or distract us from annoyances, so we want them, even if we could get the same result more simply and with less added responsability.
